Our Purpose

Let My People Sing! is a cultural project expanding the ancient and transformative practice of Jewish communal singing.

We gather in multi-racial, multicultural and genderful Jewish community, uplifting songs and leaders historically and ongoingly pushed to the margins.

Together, we transmit and reclaim diasporic Jewish singing traditions, celebrate original music emerging from our communities, and create heart-centered gatherings where we can all be leaders and learners of song.

Our Vision

We envision a more liberated world, overflowing with song and prayer, in which Jewish communities are resourced by our musical traditions.

We imagine communities where the interdependence we practice when singing together is woven into the ways we care for each other, share resources, build a more liberated world, and deepen our connection to ourselves and the Divine.

“LMPS reminded me what is possible when we trust and believe in each other’s heart song. I feel re-energized as I continue to build my own singing community and the song has given me new wells to draw on in resistance and healing.”
— Retreat Participant

Let My People Sing! fosters a community of Jewish musicians, song carriers, and song leaders who together are creating Jewish music and song of the future.

We look to our teachers, who, through offering their music, knowledge, and gifts at our programs, form the foundation for the cultural transmission that happens at Let My People Sing!  We also look to our participants, who, through leading workshops, guiding ritual, and offering songs, expand our repertoire and increase our collective capacity to sing.

Our work

The project of Let My People Sing! is to uplift the voices of: Queer and trans Jews, Mizrahi and Sefardi Jews, Jews of color, Jews with disabilities, women and femmes, people singing in Ladino, Yiddish, and Judeo-Arabic, and other people who have been historically and ongoingly marginalized, and in some cases erased, from normative Jewish culture and practice.

Let My People Sing! brings together traditions across Jewish time and space, from ancient to contemporary music, and everything in between.

Our project includes restoring lost or broken lineages of cultural transmission, and simultaneously elevating, celebrating, learning and teaching the incredible new music coming out of our communities. Through this work we connect to our spiritual, familial and chosen ancestors, we heal trauma, and we deepen our human interconnectedness.

Let My People Sing! builds a palace in time: a temporary intentional community that is: intergenerational, radically inclusive, and thrives on difference of all kinds, including religious and political.

Our goal is not that everyone feel comfortable 100% of the time, but rather that everyone is uncomfortable at some point, in the context of a loving and supportive environment, and that the same people are not always shouldering the burden of marginality. We welcome difference and believe that it stretches us all to our more vibrant selves.

At Let My People Sing! everyone can be a leader and a learner of song.

Our retreats are a place to practice and develop leadership and new skills with the support, mentorship, and love of the core team, teachers, and the entire community. Our vision is for more kinds of people to learn how to embody and lead Jewish music and tradition, transforming us individually and transforming Judaism as a whole. This is a project of spreading seeds of song that go out into the world to sprout new singing communities and singing culture far and wide.
