Building the culture of LMPS!

We take time to go over this culture document at each retreat to support us all in co-creating the culture that makes Let My People Sing! an inclusive and magical space.

  • This experience is a gift and an experiment that we are co-creating together. Thank you all for being a part of it. Please assume best intentions and work generously with one another.

  • Everyone can sing! Singing together is not about “singing well” - it is about being together and becoming more fully human and alive through the power of song. Your unique voice is essential in co-creating our collective voice.

  • To whatever extent possible, share what you know about where songs come from: history, origin, background.  You’re also welcome to share briefly how you learned it and who taught it to you. If you are sharing a song from a culture and/or lineage that is not your own, and you are unsure if it is appropriate to share, the LMPS team is available to help you think it through.

  • Please do not imitate, exaggerate, or make fun of any group of people’s cultural or spiritual traditions or ways of expressing themselves, especially when they’re not your own. It is on each of us to know that everything we’re bringing is offered with authenticity, integrity, and respect.

  • Allow for spaciousness after the end of each song to let the energy of the song settle.

  • We see everyone as a leader and learner of song! Help us live into this ethos by leaning into your growing edge. If you’re someone who’s quick to jump in, consider first pausing and leaving space for someone else. If you’re someone who’s less likely to take up space, consider giving it a try (we’re here to lovingly support you!).

  • We believe in the power of bringing together our voices in song and following the leadership of those leading. To support this, we ask for participants to refrain from playing additional instruments while others are leading, unless the leader(s) explicitly invites that.

  • We are a Jewish community of many different experiences, backgrounds and identities. Help us celebrate that abundance by not making assumptions about one another, and instead staying open and curious about each other. And of course, each of us should feel free to only share with others as much or as little as we feel comfortable.
